Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder that many people struggle with every day. IBS is a chronic condition that can cause pain, bloating, and gas and can affect your daily life. It’s important to talk to your gastroenterologist about treating your IBS and how lifestyle changes can help you manage your daily symptoms and pain.

Living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Typically, IBS is easy to manage with lifestyle changes and other treatments. It’s important to talk to your gastroenterologist about abdominal pain and if you might be living with IBS. IBS usually brings changes like abdominal pain and changes in the appearance and frequency of your bowel movements. If you notice that you consistently have changes in your bowel movements, you need to see your doctor to determine if you have IBS.

The first thing your doctor will have you do to manage your IBS is make some lifestyle changes. You should eat plenty of high-fiber foods, drink lots of fluids, and exercise regularly. You should also avoid foods that trigger your symptoms. You can determine what might trigger symptoms by keeping a food journal. This can help you find out what you ate when you experienced pain so that you know what to avoid to prevent an attack in the future.

Your gastroenterologist might also recommend taking a fiber supplement to help prevent constipation. If your IBS is more severe, your doctor might also recommend certain medications to help manage symptoms and control your bowel movements. This can help with either diarrhea or constipation and you’ll be able to have more regular bowel movements as your body adjusts.
