It utilizes an endoscope, which is a flexible tube with a small camera at the end to enable your doctor to check your internal organs. Here at Digestive Medicine Associates in our Hialeah, Coral Gables, Pembroke Pines and Miami, FL, locations your doctor may suggest an endoscopy if you’re experiencing:

  • Gastritis
  • Digestive tract bleeding
  • Ulcers
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Stomach pain
  • Polyps or abnormal growths in your colon
  • Difference in regular bowel habits (diarrhea or chronic constipation)

Common Types of Endoscopy Procedures

An endoscopy can be done in various parts of the body. Different types of endoscopic procedures include:

  • Gastrointestinal endoscopy. This type of procedure involves the examination of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which consists of the esophagus, stomach, and upper intestine. An upper GI endoscopy is usually advised if you are experiencing stomach pain, chronic heartburn, gastrointestinal bleeding, difficulty in swallowing, and unintended, sudden weight loss.
  • This procedure is utilized to spot any abnormalities or differences in your large intestine (colon and rectum). In many cases, a colonoscopy may be advised if you are over the age of 50 for routine colon cancer screenings.
  • This is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the abdomen or pelvis. It is minimally invasive since only minute incisions are made. A laparoscopy could likewise be performed for gall bladder removal, hysterectomy, and some weight loss procedures.

What to Expect When Preparing for an Endoscopy

For most types of endoscopic procedures, your doctor may instruct you to not consume any solid foods 12 hours prior to the procedure. Certain kinds of clear drinks, however, can be consumed two hours before the procedure.

On the evening before the procedure, your doctor may provide you with enemas or laxatives to cleanse your system. This type of preparatory action is often used for endoscopic procedures that include the anus and the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Ahead of the endoscopy, your doctor will perform a physical examination and check your full medical history as well.
